How to make a donut, by the Nissan 370Z NISMO

In celebration of June 3 as #NationalDonutDay, Formula Drift icon Chris Forsberg took to a production set in Southern California to put a unique spin on making donuts. Forsberg’s mission was to fling thousands of the tiny sprinkles onto more than 300 donuts using a Nissan 370Z NISMO as a utensil.

To be sure each of the cakes received ample coating, the team brought in two pallets of sprinkles weighing in at more than 2,800 pounds. Using all 350 horsepower on tap in the 370Z NISMO, Forsberg made 15 passes, ensuring a proper layer of sprinkles was achieved.

By the time it was over, more than 325 donuts and 120 boxes of sprinkles were used to create the stunt. However, the 370Z NISMO that powered the experiment proved to be the most delicious treat on the set.

The Future of Auto Innovation for Nissan Takes Shape in Silicon Valley

From Nissan News

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Nissan now has a new research center in the heart of Silicon Valley.  Company leaders said they plan to partner with other companies and research institutions to develop the best and most advanced technology possible.

“This is where everything is happening.  This is where all the intelligence lies, so this is where Nissan needs to be,” said Nissan Americas Senior Vice President of Research and Development Carla Bailo.

The new facility is part of Nissan’s global plan to expand research and development outside of Japan into key local markets.  The team will work with the Nissan Research Center team in Japan to develop autonomous driving vehicles, in other words, car that can safely drive themselves.

“I think Nissan wants to create the future for mobility in autonomous driving,” said Nissan Corporate Vice President Takao Asami.

Researchers will also look for ways to connect the car with the internet, existing infrastructure, and other self-driving cars.  They will additionally research what’s called Human Machine Interface, so autonomous and connected cars can interact better with people.

“This lab is focused in reaching out beyond the cars to things that are beyond the automobile.  It is really trying to think about the car in society and not just the car and the interior of it and I think that’s the future,” said MIT Media Lab Professor Alex Pentland.

The Renault-Nissan Alliance has had a presence in Silicon Valley since 2011 with an office in Mountain View, Calif.  Now the Alliance will continue their work in the larger lab in Sunnyvale.

“We hope to be an open center and have collaborations with the Silicon Valley attitude and with the Silicon Valley spirit.  Nissan is well positioned I think to take the next step and be a leader in autonomous driving and connected vehicles and that is very exciting,” said Research Director for Nissan Research Center Silicon Valley Dr. Maarten Sierhuis.

Some of the smartest and most innovative minds in the area will come together here to move the car industry and Nissan Motor Company into a new, more advanced, even Jetson-like era.

“Maybe we will have a Jetsons era.  We will see,” said Bailo.

Nissan to give $50,000 grant and 2013 Altima to everyday innovators as part of “Nissan Innovation Garage” campaign

FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Computers, the electric car, music — some of the world’s best ideas have been born in garages. To celebrate “everyday ideas” and inspire the creation of the next great innovation, Nissan is launching “Nissan Innovation Garage,” a social movement that offers everyone an opportunity to showcase their best ideas.

Beginning today, aspiring innovators will be asked “Wouldn’t it be cool if____?” and Nissan could help bring their ideas to life. Each idea submitted online at www.NissanInnovationGarage.com will be reviewed and voted on by a panel of judges that will include established engineers from a variety of fields. Two grand prize winners will be selected to receive a $50,000 grant to turn their idea into a reality, as well as a brand new 2013 Altima. Nissan will also help unleash winning ideas on Kickstarter.com, a funding platform for creative projects.

“People from all walks of life have great ideas each and every day, and we think it’s important to nurture the spirit of innovation,” said Jon Brancheau, vice president, Marketing, Nissan North America. “By finding, cultivating and supporting the best and brightest ideas, we will give those who care about making the world around them a better place, the platform in which to do so.”

In addition, ideas will be showcased in an online gallery and a “fan favorite” will be awarded Nissan’s most innovative Altima yet. To create a shareable experience and help innovators generate fan votes, each idea will turn into a short, customized film to share with friends. Submissions will be accepted through October 12.

Building on its “Innovation that excites” philosophy, Nissan’s hunt for the next great innovation was inspired by the all-new fifth generation Altima – the most innovative Altima yet – which promises to shake up the mid-size sedan segment with its interior innovations and styling. Among the 2013 Altima’s many attributes are its best-in-segment fuel economy of 38 mpg highway (2.5-liter engine), new premium exterior styling, an upscale interior with premium materials, including NASA-inspired “zero-gravity” front seats, and an outstanding balance of ride comfort, stability and a fun-to-drive demeanor.

Nissan Sentra Wins Best in Class Combined Fuel Economy and More

DALLAS – Nissan’s march toward 8 percent market share advanced last weekend in Dallas, Texas. That’s where media and fans got a first look at the all-new 2013 Nissan Sentra.

This is the third of five new vehicles that Nissan said it would deliver during a 15 month period. The Sentra continues the best-in-class fuel efficiency drumbeat heard from Nissan recently. The car gets a best-in-class 34 MPG* for combined highway and city driving.

The 2013 Sentra is completely changed. Outside, there are improved proportions. The car is more than 150 pounds leaner. The company’s engineers made changes inside to create more room in the car and in the trunk. The new Sentra has one of the largest interiors and rear-seat leg room. It’s equipped with class-above technology and has new styling more similar to an Altima.

“The 2013 Nissan Sentra is the most revolutionary design in the nameplate’s 30-year history, a worthy addition to what is without question the most innovative, highest quality, highest value sedan lineup in Nissan history,” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc.

The other drumbeat heard last weekend came from bands celebrating the start of U.S. college football during the Alabama versus Michigan game. Nissan, and the all-new Sentra, had a major presence at the event. The company has a partnership with the Heisman Trophy Trust that runs through 2016.

This new 2013 Nissan Sentra will be at U.S., Mexico and Canada dealerships in October.

Got Kids???? Check out the Cars.com Video Review of the 2011 Nissan Quest. You won’t find a better minivan!

Dave Thomas reviews the Nissan Quest on Cars.com. Besides the interior, which he says is among “the best I’ve seen,” he mentions the “upscale interior” and “packs performance”.  We challenge you to find a better (or cooler) minivan!

The minivan of ALL minivans is here at Carousel Nissan, Iowa City!

Here’s a few photos from the 2011 Nissan Quest that has arrived on our lot!

This last December, Car and Driver Magazine did their First Drive Review of the Nissan Quest and we are ecstatic that they noted the many “cool” features this minivan offers! They noted the sleek styling of the roof and grille that transformed the look of the 2011 model. Steve Siler states in the article, “We’ll go on record as stating that we like it—for the most part—when cars cause controversy with their styling, especially when they are minivans.” They also picked up on the ultra-comfortable first and second row captain chair seating and roomy 3rd row. As for how it drives, Steve Siler is quoted, “The Quest’s rock-solid new structure yields a wonderfully boom-free cabin as well as reasonably tidy handling, and the electrohydraulic speed-sensitive steering has positive on-center feel with a natural buildup in effort as one turns the wheel. Smooth transitions are easy in the Quest, and that’s not something we can say about every family box out there.” And lastly, our favorite line in the entire article, Mr. Siler closes the article with, “Of all the 2011 minivan offerings, it is arguably the coolest—or at least the most bold—and coolness is a quality not often found in this segment.”

Nissan: Buying vs. Leasing, what makes sense for you?

Here’s a few things to think about when trying to decide whether to buy or lease a new vehicle. For some people the choice is just a personal one, other times, it may be financial. Purchasing from Nissan, allows you to:

  • Build equity.
  • Drive as many miles as you want.

  • Customize your vehicle (though this may invalidate portions of your warranty).
  • Sell, trade, or transfer title whenever you want.
  • Find purchase terms ranging from 12—72 months

Leasing from Nissan, allows you to:

  • Pay only for the portion of the car’s life that you use (which means a lower monthly payment).
  • Receive tax benefits if used for business (depending on the lease, state, and tax laws).
  • Invest any savings in appreciating assets (such as stocks, bonds, etc.).
  • Spread applicable sales tax across monthly payments (varies by state).
  • Enjoy end-of-lease options: you can buy the car, lease another vehicle, or explore other choices.
  • Find leasing terms ranging from 24—60 months

“Nissan is committed to bringing zero-emission mobility to the United States, and around the world,” said Carlos Tavares, Chairman, Nissan Americas. “A part of that commitment is delivering a one-stop shop experience for the new car owner, which is why we chose AeroVironment. As a result of our selection, drivers of the Nissan LEAF will be able to charge their vehicles safely overnight at their own homes.”

“By introducing a practical electric passenger and fleet vehicle, Nissan is moving boldly to link driving with zero emissions and energy independence,” said Tim Conver, AV’s chairman and chief executive officer. “Our selection as Nissan’s preferred charging equipment and service provider, for what we believe will be the largest adoption of battery electric cars in history, represents a great opportunity to apply our nationwide EV charging infrastructure solutions to the successful introduction of the Nissan LEAF. We are committed to making those who purchase a Nissan LEAF and our universal home charging system successful in the use of clean, electric vehicles.”
